CHIMU
A.D. 900-A.D. 1400

himu was located in the Moche valley and was the largest Late Intermediate Period kingdom to arise on the desert coast. Chan Chan, its capital, was a spectacular labyrinth of adobe walls that enclosed vast palace compounds, or ciudadelas, where the elite ruling classes lived. Chan Chan also included special compounds where state workers and artisans lived. It is estimated that 10,000 artisans lived and worked in the capital. The men specialized in metal objects and the women in woven goods. These high-status goods were distributed by Chimu rulers to enhance their power. Chimu ceramic vessels were mold made and rarely painted.
